Robots and Wizards:
Creativity's Two Mindsets

video preview

I'm starting a new thing called 2-Minute Tuesdays. Each Tuesday, I host on Youtube a new video about the creative process. These are nuggets from my book and new material as well as research about creative genius and how you can unlock yours.

Since this is new, I need your help. Please subscribe to my Youtube and share this email or the video with a friend who you think is a creative genius in need of some encouragement and challenge!

Robots and Wizards

Robots and Wizards represent the two ways of thinking involved with the creative process. When we learn to recognize these in ourselves and others, we can assess what mindset is in play. Wizard is open-minded. Robot thinks critically. At a table, we hope to have meaningful conversations, but poor self-awareness thwarts us. While one side of the table looks at many possibilities, the other evaluates and sorts. Both ways are normal and welcome. But not at the same time!

There is a time to find ideas and open your mind to them. This might be with a new person you hope to connect with. If they come from a different culture, generation, or life-experience, it would be anti-social to not empathize with their story. One reason it is nearly impossible today to have a hard conversation is that we delegate media to host them. Social media amplifies angst and conflict. The Wizard waits, listens, and sees the other.

Robot comes into the picture, too. But if Robot judges the other person at the table too quickly, heat arises. It is better to delay a critical response until after Wizard humbly listens. And Robot might find that judgement internally is more effective. The person on the other side of the table said some things that trouble you. Why does everything need an immediate and vocal reaction?

Nuance is the dance between Robot and Wizard. We employ empathy first and then logic later. We then switch back and forth. When we do this, we are using our creative brain to see more than just one side of the conversation. The trick is in knowing which you prefer and then learning to grow in the other to improve your creativity. That works in hard conversation and in your creative projects.

Keep Creating!
